How this estimator works

This product produces planning estimates for SMB insurance coverage. It does not issue quotes, bind policies, or replace licensed insurance advice. Outputs are based on public benchmark data, jurisdiction-specific workers' compensation inputs, and a deterministic Rust rules engine running on the backend.

The estimator starts from industry benchmark cost ranges for core coverages such as general liability, business owner's policy, workers' compensation, E&O, and cyber.

It then applies deterministic multiplier logic for jurisdiction, revenue, payroll, employee count, claims history, and operational exposures such as field work, customer traffic, vehicle use, and sensitive data handling.

Workers' compensation is handled more structurally when a jurisdiction/industry rate card exists. In those cases the model uses payroll-per-$100 logic plus the published loss cost or LCM assumptions included in the dataset.

Confidence is a planning signal, not a certainty claim. It drops when the output range is wide, when payroll is missing and must be proxied, or when the scenario depends on lower-signal assumptions. The engine only uses the 90+ band when a line is backed by direct official rate-table support or a direct public state-fund schedule and fully reported exposures. Carrier-benchmark and derived planning lines remain below that band even when the profile is otherwise clean.

The COI readiness checklist uses jurisdiction baselines, recommended coverages, and operational exposures to highlight common evidence, document, endorsement, and compliance needs.

  • 1. Official regulators, agencies, and workers' comp authorities
  • 2. Official platform/vendor documentation for infrastructure
  • 3. Public insurer or market benchmark education pages
  • 4. Derived internal datasets with retained provenance metadata

Every released dataset should preserve source identifiers, effective dates, retrieval dates, and jurisdiction scope. Unsupported or weakly sourced scenarios should reduce confidence rather than create false precision.
